I think one of my biggest struggles while dealing with infertility was the feeling of no control. I wanted a child so badly but I did not have a whole lot of control over making that happen. So, I took advantage of the things that I did have control of. I charted, went to doctors, tried fertility treatments, took my vitamins, ate healthy, etc, etc..., so many of you know the drill. I did everything in my power to try and make it happen for us, to try and start our family. The thought of not being able to do anything drove me crazy.
When we decided that adoption was our next step, I moved forward in the same way. I worked and worked on the paperwork. I ordered birth certificates, gathered pictures, got our background checks done, made doctor appointments. I wanted to get us approved ASAP! Then we were approved. We were finally there and the waiting {and finding} began.
This is when FSA came into our lives. We started attending the monthly board meeting where we got to know other couples that had adopted or were also hoping to adopt. We plan activities and help with the adoption education classes. We discuss ways to reach out to the community, to help educate others on adoption in hopes that we will find more birth parents for so many of us that are hoping to adopt. We help plan a birth parent celebration night for those birth parents in our chapter that have recently placed their child for adoption and so much more!
In the adoption education classes, they talk a lot about "finding" your child. FSA was one way that I felt like I was trying to do that. It is one area that I feel I have a little more control in trying to move the adoption process along, by doing my part to spread the word of adoption. And, along the way, I have made wonderful friends, found great support, and have had a lot of fun. I have found people that understand the unique struggle of infertility and the joys and challenges that come with adoption.
We would love to have any of you come join us at our monthly board meeting and do as much or as little as you feel comfortable with! We also have an activity for hoping to adopt and adoptive families coming up in September so keep your eye out for upcoming information on that!
